100 Year old Giant crashes to earth

Written by Daniel Hurst for Redlands Times 11 January

A LARGE fig tree thought to be at least 100 years old came crashing down near Cleveland's Courthouse Restaurant on Tuesday night.
A unit block at the end of Paxton Street escaped any damage, with the big tree falling in the direction of Moreton Bay instead of the nearby residential building adjoining Harold Walker Park.
"It couldn't really have fallen in a better spot," local resident Darren Saffigna said.
Darren, who watched the tree fall after he heard some noises about 6pm, said he heard cracking sounds and then "a huge big thump".
The tree's root system appeared to be affected by a fungal infection and Council staff and tree loppers were on hand for the clean-up operation on Wednesday morning.
The Redland Times understands root samples have been taken to the Queensland Forestry Research Institute to have the fungus identified.
